Netherlands u19 defender Karim Rekik has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

Rekik made his league debut for the first-team in December’s 1-0 win over Reading and has been an integral member of Attilio Lombardo’s City Elite Development Squad so far this season.

The 18-year old committed his future to the club earlier this season by signing a new long term deal and is thought of as one of the brightest young prospects in the squad

It will be Karim’s second loan spell in the Championship after he spent the end of last season at Portsmouth, making six appearances for the south coast club.

While Karim will undoubtedly be missed from City’s FA Youth Cup squad, it’s hoped that the experience at Blackburn will aid his development into a first-team contender at the Etihad Stadium.

Blackburn are currently positioned in eight place in the Championship table, just two places and six points outside of the play-off places.

The move reunites Rekik with Blackburn boss Michael Appleton who was his manager during that loan spell at Pompey last term.

“He’s going to be a Premier League player for the next 15 or 20 years - I feel lucky that we’ve got him,” Appleton told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“I’ve certainly brought him here to play. What we’ve got at the moment is a back four who are playing very well at the minute, so they’ll all be expecting to play every week.

But if there’s a situation where people get knocks or look as if they are lagging a bit and need a rest, then Karim can step into that mark.

Rekik will be eligible for Blackburn’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.
