James Milner played all 90 minutes to help England to a 3-1 victory over Scotland in Tuesday’s friendly clash.

The City man turned in a typically assured display, full of energy and quality. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring and Wayne Rooney added a second – heading home from Wilshere’s ball after Scotland were unable to clear Milner’s dangerous free kick.

He might have had one himself but for the efforts of Charlie Mulgrew, who threw himself in front of Milner’s low, hard shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Rooney added a third late on to restore the two goal cushion after Andrew Robertson had pulled one back for the hosts – the captain finishing off a slick attacking move including more good work from Milner on the right wing.

In France, Eliaquim Mangala and Bacary Sagna both completed the full complement of minutes as part of a defence which kept a morale-boosting clean sheet against Sweden.

Raphael Varane scored the winner for Les Bleus late on, while Karim Benzema also missed a penalty. John Guidetti came on after 68 minutes to earn his second senior cap for Sweden.

City’s right back was heavily involved going forward as well as defending, narrowly missing the top left corner with a first half shot, before setting up Antione Griezmann in the second half who saw his attempt blocked.

Sagna also had a late attempt on goal himself but blazed the ball high and wide from a corner.

Martin Demichelis was City’s only participant in the clash between Argentina and Portugal at Old Trafford. In a game that lacked the spark promised in the endless build-up, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo only lasted 45 minutes apiece as the defences won plaudits over attack.

La Albiceleste were hit by a late sucker punch and went down 1-0 to a stoppage time Raphael Guerreiro strike, having dominated throughout but being unable to find the finishing touch.

Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Willy Caballero were unused substitutes against the Portuguese.

In Vienna, Fernandinho won a starting berth as Brazil continue rebuilding following the World Cup. The midfielder gave a good account of himself and played the first 82 minutes as La Selecao ran out 2-1 victors over Austria.

Former Chelsea man David Luiz gave Brazil the lead, before the hosts equalised from the penalty spot. Substitute Robert Firmino grabbed the winner to ensure Brazil retain their flawless international record from the six games since the conclusion of the World Cup.

Aleks Kolarov and Matija Nastasic both sat out Serbia’s 2-0 friendly win over Greece.
