Marcos Lopes admitted he was surprised to pick up the 'Rising Star' North-West Football Award.

The Portuguese midfielder, currently on loan with French side Lille, saw off the challenge of Everton’s highly-rated midfielder Ross Barkley to secure the award at a glitzy event on Tuesday evening.

Speaking from Lille, Marcos said: “It is was a surprise if I’m honest, but I’m very happy to have won it. Looking at some of the people I was up against, it is even more special because Barkley in particular had a great season last year.

“Any award is pleasing but this one is special because there are so many big clubs in the north-west.”

Lopes is currently sidelined with a muscular injury sustained in Lille’s 1-1 draw with St Etienne three weeks ago and is not expected back until early December.

He has enjoyed his stay with the Ligue 1 side and says he has felt the benefit of regular first-team football.

“It has been really good so far though the injuries have been frustrating,” the 18-year-old added. “I just want to return to playing as soon as possible.

“I have the rest of the season ahead of me and I’m only thinking of my time with Lille at present, but I’m obviously hoping I can continue to gain experience and use that when I return to City next season.”

Steph Houghton made it a double celebration at the awards ceremony when the MCWFC skipper was voted the North-West Women’s Player of the Year.

Congratulations from everyone at the Club to both Marcos and Steph.
