Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and David Silva (two) scored for the champions in a five-star performance at the Etihad Stadium.
Not only did the result and performance boost City’s Premier League hopes - they now trail leaders Chelsea by just five points - but it sends them into Tuesday’s Champions League game against Barcelona in great spirits.
Pellegrini is keen to keep the attacking momentum despite Barca’s stellar squad.
The manager also pointed out the City are better placed for the last 16 stage than they were last season, when the Catalan side progressed.
Pellegrini said: “It is better because last year we arrived in February after we played 18 games in December and January, of those 18 we won 16 and drew two.
“I think we arrived not in our best moment. There was also the sending off of Martin Demichelis. This year we played less games in January. We will try to continue in the Champions League.
“All the games are different but we are going to try from the beginning as we did today to be an aggressive team and to try and score goals.
“Maybe it is not a normal game because it is 180 minutes, so you must try to score but try not concede. But on Tuesday I am sure you will see our team trying to play in the same way.”
Pellegrini praised the performance of Edin Dzeko and David Silva after the Magpies victory.
The big Bosnian striker was impressive throughout, with the control and finish for his goal of the highest order.
It was no surprise who set that strike up - Silva - and the little Spaniard scored two quick-fire goals after the break to add gloss to a powerhouse performance.
“For Edin it is very important,” Pellegrini added. “Maybe one of the things that happened in January was that Edin was just returning from a long injury and Sergio also.
“Both of them, as they have minutes, will return to their normal performance. Edin not only scored but worked very well the whole game.
“I think David has already improved a lot. In the last game against Stoke he came back from an injury in his knee.
“Maybe he was not playing 100 per cent a few weeks ago but when he is 100 per cent he always makes a difference.
“It is always very important for David and the team to have him in good condition.”
