The freescoring City striker has hit the ground running since joining Walsall on loan this season, becoming an instant crowd favourite at the Bescot Stadium.
Hiwula attended the Elite Development Squad’s 3-1 win over Fulham at the Academy Stadium on Friday afternoon, so we caught up with him to find out how he’s taking to life in the Midlands.
“I feel like I’m improving every day – I’m training hard and the goals are coming,” he told mcfc.co.uk.
“I think going on loan to Yeovil at the start of the season has helped me – we also play a style of football that really suits my game.
“They get the ball down and play at Walsall, we play out from the back like the under-21s do at City.
“We also play a lot of through balls and that’s how I like to play, on the shoulder of the defender, trying to turn him and get in behind.”
In a twist of fate, Hiwula scored the winning goal against the side he spent a month with on loan earlier in the season.
It didn’t go down too well with the Yeovil supporters, as he recalls: “I didn’t celebrate but it was a good feeling as I got booed for some strange reason!
“We won the game, so that was the main thing.”
Jordy initially joined Walsall on a month’s youth loan before his contract was extended last week and in a tight, unpredictable League One, The Saddlers find themselves just five points out of the play-off picture.
It’s a gap his loan side are more than capable of making up, according to the 20-year old.
“I scored three goals and that’s where there were talks about the contract being extended – it was such a big boost to hear that Walsall wanted to keep me for longer,” Hiwula remembers.
“There’s five points between eight teams in League One and we’re playing well, so hopefully we can make the play-offs.”
Another incentive for Jordy to keep scoring goals over the next over the next fortnight is to ensure he’s in the XI when Walsall take on Bristol City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley at the end of the month.
It would be the youngster’s first-ever appearance at the home of English football and he’s determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity.
“We all got our suits measured yesterday, so we can’t wait for it,” he added.
“I’ve never played at Wembley before – apparently they’ve sold more than 50,000 tickets for it, so yeah, I can’t wait – it should be an amazing experience.”
