Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum put the hosts ahead inside ten minutes and despite a lot of possession for Pep Guardiola’s side, they couldn’t find an equaliser.
Fernandinho believes City can take heart from their second half performance but they must take their chances.
He said: “It was a disappointing night for us, especially the way we played in the second half. We couldn’t score a goal to equalise and we are very sad because of that.
“Both sides were close, trying to close the space and not give any space to their opponent. They scored a goal from the header and we tried to keep playing with the way we are playing but unfortunately we couldn’t score the goal.”
The defeat leaves City with 39 points from 19 matches – ten behind Premier League leaders Chelsea. However, the Brazilian insists City are still hunting for the title.
“It’s too early to say if Chelsea are going to be the champion at the end of the season. We all know the Premier League is so tough, we are just going into January and I hope we can turn it around and be at the top as soon as possible,” he said.
