The Mancunian side of this storied, all-Blue rivalry has undoubtedly enjoyed these FA Cup clashes most, with City boasting four wins and just a solitary defeat.
You have to go back 101 years for the last time Chelsea knocked us out of the FA Cup and that’s where we start our rundown of five famous clashes against the Stamford Bridge side…
City 0-1 Chelsea: 1914/15
32,000 were present at Hyde Road on 20 February 1915 for Chelsea’s only victory over City in the FA Cup.
The hosts had overcome Preston North End and Aston Villa to reach the third round of the competition before facing off against the Londoners in a match which was settled by a single goal.
Bob Thomson scored the goal to put Chelsea on the road to the final which was played at Old Trafford, where they lost 3-0 to Sheffield United.
City 2-0 Chelsea: 1947/48
Another 30 years passed before the two teams came out of the hat together oncemore.
On 24 January 1948, Chelsea made the trip up to Manchester where they were beaten 2-0 by Jock Thomson’s City.
Goals from Billy Linacre and George Smith won the day to book our place in the next round of the cup.
Chelsea 0-3 City: 1970/71
The scoreline was even more emphatic in City’s favour when the sides came up against one another in the middle of one our so-called “golden ages”.
This was our first ever FA Cup tie away at Stamford Bridge and we certainly made it a memorable one, running out 3-0 winners in one of five games we would play against Chelsea that season in three different competitions.
Colin Bell struck twice and Ian Bowyer grabbed the other in front of 50,000 supporters in the capital to set up a tie against Arsenal in the next round.
City 2-1 Chelsea: 2012/13
One of our many recent trips to Wembley and one of the best…
City were deserved winners in the 2012/13 FA Cup semi-final, winning courtesy of goals by Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero.
Demba Ba replied midway through the second half but it wasn’t enough as Roberto Mancini’s side held out for a 2-1 win.
That set up a final against Wigan Athletic but we don’t need to go there now...
City 2-0 Chelsea: 2013/14
Samir Nasri was once again on the scoresheet when City last played Chelsea in the FA Cup.
Stevan Jovetic scored the other as the Blues out-thought, out-played and out-fought the West Londoners and book a place in the quarter-finals in the process.
Following shortly after a painful Premier League defeat to Chelsea, this 2-0 win served as sweet revenge for Manuel Pellegrini’s side in what turned out to be a trophy-laden season.
Unfortunately, Wigan once again halted our FA Cup progress with a surprise 2-1 win at the Etihad in March and denied us another appearance at Wembley.
