Back through the years to see what happened on this day in City history...

1961

The first game that features in today’s article is the 3-0 win against West Brom on this day 55 years ago.

A crowd of 21,382 were in attendance as Colin Barlow (pictured) score twice and Barrie Betts got the other to secure the two points to move City three points clear of the relegation zone.

1978

Fast forward 17 years and City were looking to close the gaps on leaders Nottingham Forest in the old Division One.

The Blues were in fantastic form heading into the game against QPR at Maine Road, having won their previous six games and had only conceded three goals in the process.

Mike Channon and Colin Bell scored the two goals that secured a 2-1 win to move City within six points of Brian Clough’s Forest.

1984

City’s excellent record on the 11 February continued in 1984 as they made it three wins and two draws in the five games played on this day in City history.

Billy McNeill’s side were in third place in the old Division Two and welcomed a mid-table Portsmouth side, who were looking to move away from the chasing pack as just three points separated them from 18th place.

Goals from Jim Tolmie and Nicky Reid ensured City would remain hot on the tails of first-place Chelsea to continue their push for promotion back to the top-flight.

1989

22,145 spectators were in attendance to see the Blues demolish Ipswich 4-0 at Maine Road on this day 27 years ago.

Wayne Biggins notched a brace, while Trevor Morley and Brian Gayle grabbed the other goals to keep City within a point of top spot.

1988/89 proved to be a good season for Mel Machin’s side as promotion to Division One was confirmed with a second place finish come the end of May.

2015

City were looking to strengthen their grip on second place and keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea when they headed to the Britannia Stadium this time last year.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a fantastic individual effort which saw him pick the ball up just inside Stoke’s half and drive towards goal before driving the ball past Asmir Begovic.

The lead was shortlived though as Peter Crouch headed home to level the scores just six minutes after Aguero’s goal.

City turned on the style after half time when David Silva and Samir Nasri combined to set up James Milner to restore the lead.

Aguero notched his second goal of the evening from the penalty spot after Silva was felled in the area before Nasri completed the scoring 15 minutes from time to seal the three points.
