The 16th of February has not been the best day for the Blues over the years as they have played seven times: winning once, drawing four times and losing twice!

1980

Leeds United visited Maine Road on this day 36 years ago. The game was a mid-table clash with City sitting in 16th and Leeds in 10th.

The game started well for the visitors who took a tenth minute lead through George Graham. City came out fighting in the second half and were able to bring the game level in the 61st minute through a goal from Paul Power. That goal proved to be the final one as the game ended 1-1.

City ended the season in 17th position, ensuring they remained in the First Division.

1991

On this day in 1991, Gary Lund’s 85th-minute goal ended City’s dreams of a FA Cup Final appearance as Notts County grab a late winner in the FA Cup 5th round tie at Meadow Lane.

The Blues had seen off Burnley and Port Vale in the previous rounds and were strong favourites to beat the Division Two side, but a series of wasted opportunities allowed the Magpies to progress to the quarter-finals via Lund’s solitary strike.

2010

The Britannia Stadium is a notoriously hard place to get a result and it was a tough afternoon on this day in 2010 where City came away with a point against the Potters.

It was a fiery clash as Stoke were reduced to ten men just before the hour mark when Abdoulaye Faye was given his marching orders in controversial circumstances. Despite being at a numerical disadvantage player-wise Stoke took the lead in the 72nd minute with a long distance strike from Glenn Whelan.

With the game petering out, City were trying all they could to get the equaliser and it arrived five minutes before time when Gareth Barry poked home an Emmanuel Adebayor flicked header.

2012

City travelled to Portugal on this day in 2012 to play against Porto in the Europa League first leg of the last 32. The side from the Ribeira district in Portugal were the reigning champions in the competition.

The Blues trailed to a Silvestre Varela close-range effort following powerful play from Hulk. However City deservedly equalised in the 55th minute as Yaya Toure’s cross was turned in by Porto defender Alvaro Pereira.

Victory was sealed by Sergio Aguero six minutes from time and it was another cross from Toure which unlocked the Porto defence. The goal sparked scenes of jubilation amongst the travelling City fans at the Estadio do Dragao.
