1899
Jimmy Ross signed for City on this day 117 years ago. He was famed for his part in the League and Cup double claimed by Preston in 1889, Ross was one of football’s leading names. He made an immediate impact and helped City to the Division Two title with seven goals in the final nine games of the season.
He continued to establish City’s name until tragedy struck in 1902 when he died after an illness described as ‘acute skin disease’.
1968
Sunderland were the visitors to Maine Road on this day 48 years ago, as the Blues looked to stay in the hunt for the league title.
It was a game decided by a single goal as Francis Lee netted to give City the 1-0 win. Lee was a prolific scorer and scored 148 times over the seven years that he played for the Blues.
The result left City in fourth place in the First Division with 14 games to play, and come the end of the season the Blues were champions for the first time since 1937, earning a place in the European Cup in the process.
1996
City played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with league leaders Newcastle United at Maine Road. The Kevin Keegan-led visitors equalised three times after a brace from Niall Quinn and one from Uwe Rosler had put the Blues ahead on three separate occasions.
Both sides searched for the winner as a draw would do relegation-threatened City and the title-chasing Magpies no favours at all, but the game concluded level.
2013
City proved too strong for Chelsea when the two sides met on this day in 2013. Future City midfielder Frank Lampard had the chance to score his 200th goal for Chelsea from the penalty spot but unusually he let the pressure get to him as Joe Hart saved.
Yaya Toure punished the miss shortly after when he gave City the lead in the second half, before a long-range strike from Carlos Tevez five minutes from time secured all three points.
Manchester United were running away with the title, but the win ensured there was a seven point gap between City in second and Chelsea in third.
