1960
It was 56 years ago on this day when Joe Hayes scored a brace to send Manchester City on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win versus Birmingham City.
The game had high importance as both teams were lingering towards the bottom of the table and a win for City relieved some pressure. The Blues struggled and finished in 16th position come the end of the season.
Hayes scored over 152 goals for City over his 12 seasons at the club but in this particular season the goals weren’t enough to help the team finish higher in the league.
1993
It was on this day in 1993 where during the inaugural season of Premier League football City faced Nottingham Forest looking for all three points.
A win would be welcome after losing two on the trot prior to this match, Goals from David White and Garry Flitcroft secured that much wanted win leaving the Blues in ninth position in the table.
The team couldn’t play consistently enough over the season and City finished in mid-table remaining in ninth, however staying in the Premier League was always the primary aim.
2002
On this day 14 years ago, City welcomed Sheffield Wednesday to Maine Road for a Nationwide League Division One clash looking to continue the push for promotion back to the Premier League.
A convincing 4-0 win on the day was enough to keep the Blues in second place after 90 minutes. Two goals either side of half-time made for a comfortable afternoon for City. Shaun Goater scored the final goal on the day to put the icing on the cake of a commanding performance.
City would win the league that season and finish with 99 points on the board and 108 goals amassed.
2010
Roberto Mancini’s side came of age with a spectacular 4-2 win at Premier League leaders Chelsea to move fourth in the table on this day in 2010. Frank Lampard put the hosts – who had collected 37 out of a possible 39 points so far that season at Stamford Bridge - ahead on 42 minutes, but Carlos Tevez’s sheer determination saw him out-muscle two Chelsea defenders before rolling home the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
Craig Bellamy then put the Blues ahead on 51 minutes and after Juliano Belletti was sent off and Tevez scored from the resulting penalty on 76 minutes City were well on their way to victory.
The game was over as a contest when Michael Ballack was shown a second yellow card shortly after and Bellamy added a fourth against the nine-man home team. Lampard pulled one back deep into injury time but it was too little, too late for Carlo Ancelotti’s well-beaten side.
