10. KDB-inspired turnaround, 2016
A recent’un but a good’un – the goal which booked our place in Sunday’s final.
City went into January’s Capital One Cup semi-final second leg needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Everton and had their backs pushed further against the wall when Ross Barkley cancelled out Jesus Navas’ strike in the first leg to give the Toffees a two-goal advantage.
However, a second half rally from the home side levelled the tie, with Kevin De Bruyne entering the fray from the bench to turn the game, before the decisive moment of the tie.
The Belgian’s whipped-in cross from the right flank could not have been any more inviting for Sergio Aguero, who just guided the ball beyond Joel Robles into the bottom corner of the net.
9. Tueart’s four-goal haul, 1980
*Spoiler alert* This won’t be Dennis Tueart’s only entry into the top ten of our list… though I think you might have guessed that already!
It was in the fourth round of the competition when City met Notts County at Maine Road on 29 October 1980.
Under new manager John Bond, the home side took their Midlands rivals apart over the course of the 90 minutes, with Tueart netting a four-goal haul in the rout.
His first came two minutes before the interval when he finished off a move involving Gary Buckley and Kevin Reeves and he then went on to score three more in the second period, including his fourth - a sublime individual effort five minutes from time.
8. Coming of age, 2009
A coming of age moment?
City enjoyed a night to remember in the League Cup quarter-final back in 2009 as they swept Arsenal aside at the Etihad to book a last four meeting with Manchester United.
It was the first time we had reached that stage of any domestic cup competition since our run to the FA Cup final in 1981 and so was a night of great celebration.
The win was a regulation one against a youthful Arsenal side, with Carlos Tevez, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Vladamir Weiss netting the goals to secure a 3-0 win.
7. Clough at Maine Road, 1987
In the competition then-known as the Littlewoods Cup, Second Division City secured a famous win over Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in the third round.
With gates down and no money in the kitty for City boss Mel Machin, the visit of top-flight Forest for a place in the last 16 wasn’t greeted with that much enthusiasm by the 15,168 fans that bothered turning up on a chilly October evening.
However, Machin’s side was beginning to click and when they hit top gear, they were a force to be reckoned with.
On this occasion, Forest skipper (and future City boss) Stuart Pearce would not have been pleased with his side’s display as Imre Varadi scored twice and Paul Stewart added a third to dump Clough’s team out.
6. Nasri’s wonder goal, 2014
The only bone of contention between City supporters as they danced out of Wembley after watching their side win the 2014 Capital One Cup was thus… which goal was better?
We’ve ranked Toure’s equaliser higher on our countdown but you could make a strong argument that Samir’s is unfortunate only to be at no.6.
A stunning volley with the outside of his foot following a neat interchange completed the turnaround for Manuel Pellegrini’s side against a Sunderland side who had been leading 1-0.
It seems unlikely that two more aesthetically-pleasing goals would have ever been scored by the same team in the same match in a Wembley final before or since.
So, which moment has made it no.1 in our rundown of top 20 League Cup moments? We’ll be revealed our top 5 here on mcfc.co.uk on Friday evening!
