Sevilla 1 City 3
One of City’s greatest performances on the road in Europe as the Blues swept aside the Europa League holders Sevilla in their own backyard.
The Blues knew victory would secure a place in the next round with two games to spare and in one of the most complete Champions League performances to date, raced into a 3-1 lead with 36 minutes gone.
Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho scored quick-fire goals before the hosts pulled one back – but Wilfried Bony restored the two-goal cushion before half-time as City powered their way to a first group winner’s spot.
Roma 0 City 2
Needing an unlikely win to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League, City headed to Rome determined to show what they were really capable of after some disappointing group stage results.
In fact, City had failed to win any of their first four qualification games and looked as good as over. Worse still, in the penultimate match the Blues trailed 2-1 at home to Bayern Munich with just five minutes to play, yet somehow dug out a 3-2 win.
Results elsewhere went our way meaning a win over Roma in Rome would confirm the most unlikely of qualifications. The Blues were superb on the night and second-half goals from Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta secure a first win on Italian soil and a spot in the Round of 16.
Bayern 2 City 3
With Bayern winning comfortably 3-1 at the Etihad and coasting towards the Round of 16, City travelled to Germany having already secured the runners-up spot.
The hosts opened up a 2-0 lead with just 12 minutes played, but a much-changed City side then clawed their way back into the game with David Silva pulling one back before the break.
City came out determined and full of energy for the second-half and just past the hour-mark had gone into a 3-2 lead with Aleks Kolarov and then James Milner the scorers. One more goal would have seen the Blues win the group with a better head-to-head record – and avoid a tougher draw in the next phase – but the Germans hung on to claim top spot despite losing on the night.
PSG 2 City 2
Few so called experts gave City much of a chance of coming away from the Parc de Princes with anything but a defeat but the Blues too the game to PSG in an enthralling quarter-final first leg.
But City took the game to the hosts who had a soft penalty saved by Joe Hart before Kevin De Bruyne struck the opening goal.
PSG fought back to lead 2-1, but Fernandinho’s 72nd-minute leveller earned a valuable draw for the Blues who passed their French test with flying colours.
Kyiv 1 City 3
The Ukraine champions had not long returned from their winter break when they faced the Blues, but with a baying 80,000 crowd and freezing conditions to cope with, City were at their irresistible best.
In a display that mirrored the win in Sevilla, City were comfortably in control and 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Silva.
Though the hosts pulled one back in the second period, a sumptuous curling effort from Yaya Toure on 90 minutes made the second leg little more than a formality.
