Manchester City produce a dazzling display ahead of Barcelona's visit on Tuesday

City’s 4-0 win over West Brom ended a run of six games without a win and moved them back to the top of the Premier League table.

It was a superb performance from Pep Guardiola’s side, who dominated throughout.

Fluid City

City were back to their best against West Brom.

Their passing was slick and their movement inventive. The home side were struggling to contain them, such was the fluidity in City’s play.

The stats tell their own story. City had 21 shots to West Brom’s nine and enjoyed 70 per cent possession.

There were times when the home side could barely get hold of the ball. It was total domination.

After struggling in recent weeks to produce the right pass in the final third, everything clicked in this game, much to Guardiola’s delight.

Lethal Aguero

Sergio Aguero delivered a typically lethal display, scoring two first-half goals to set City on their way.

His first underlined how clinical he can be. Ilkay Gundogan slipped a neat throughball into his path, and in the a split second he’s buried the ball pass Ben Foster from close range.

That goal settled City and their superiority became even more obvious thereafter. Aguero’s second saw him bend one from outside the area that flew right into the top corner. Foster had no chance. It was a moment of absolute brilliance.

Those goals were enough to see him leapfrog Francis Lee and move into sixth place on the club’s list of all-time leading goalscorers. He now has Billy Merideth, Joe Hayes and Colin Bell in his sights, with five more set to put him third.  

And he has also entered the top 20 Premier League goalscorers list. He has 109, just one behind Emile Heskey and two short of Dion Dublin.

He had gone six games without a goal before today – but that run came to an end in emphatic style, with Guardiola hailing him as one of the best he’s worked with during his post-match interview.

Silky Ilkay

This was perhaps Gundogan’s best performance in a City shirt. He laid on Aguero’s first, demonstrated his passing quality throughout and then scored two late goals to seal the three points.

A wonderful passer who can control a game, he knitted City’s play together at the Hawthorns.

Clean Sheet

City produced their second Premier League clean sheet of the season – a timely boost ahead of Barcelona’s visit.

Claudio Bravo was rarely tested – with Fernando, Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Aleksandar Kolarov solid in front of him.

There were so many positives for Guardiola to take from the game. Now for the big one on Tuesday night.
