It was a truly breathless encounter, with eight goals and 10 yellow cards as defenders desperately tried to stay afloat amid wave after wave of attacks.
Here’s a look at five nights to have shook the Etihad Stadium.
City 1-0 Man United, 30 April 2012
Just a few weeks after trailing our local rivals by eight points, City went into the derby knowing that a win would give them a crucial advantage over the closing stretches of the race for the Premier League title.
With so much on the line a tight game was almost inevitable, and so it proved.
Skipper Vincent Kompany provided the key moment, heading home David Silva‘s cross to send the home fans wild.
City were ahead on goal difference with just two games to go, sealing a first league title in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable thanks to Sergio Aguero‘s injury-time winner against QPR.
City 4-0 Aston Villa, 7 May 2014
City had just been knocked off top spot the day before after Liverpool’s victory against Hull and knew only a win would do against Aston Villa at a wet Etihad Stadium.
Edin Dzeko scored two goals, Stevan Jovetic added a third before Yaya Toure powered in City’s 100th goal of the league campaign.
Four days later City were crowned Premier League champions after beating West Ham.
City 3-2 Bayern Munich, 25 November 2014
Manager Pep Guardiola was involved in this night too, but as Bayern Munich boss.
With City’s 2014/15 Champions League campaign in parlous state, Sergio Aguero pulled off one of the performances of his career with a hat-trick.
Trailing 2-1 after 85 minutes, the Argentinian yet again proved his taste for the dramatic with two late goals.
City 3 Barcelona 1, 1 November 2016
City had played Barca five times before this match, and been on the losing side five times.
When Lionel Messi put the Catalan side ahead after 21 minutes a sinking of feeling of deja vu enveloped the Etihad.
This time was to be different though, with Ilkay Gundogan’s brace, either side of Kevin De Bruyne‘s imperious free-kick sealing what felt like a hugely significant victory.
City 5 Monaco 3, February 21 2017
The fuse on this firework of a game crackled for 26 minutes before it exploded into life through Raheem Sterling’s goal.
Radamel Falcao (two) and Kylian Mbappe scored for Monaco, Willy Caballero saved a penalty from the Colombian, while City fought fire with fire in the form of strikes from Sergio Aguero (two) John Stones and Leroy Sane.
In pure entertainment terms, there have been few more thrilling games of Champions League football played.
