Kompany has been in excellent form for Pep Guardiola’s side since his return from injury last month. Although he hasn’t had as much time as he would have liked to work with the Catalan coach so far, he understands the impact the manager’s work could have on the club’s future.
The 31-year-old has praised the work of his boss and insists that, with improvement in certain areas, City can challenge for trophies in the next campaign.
He said: “We’ve got a manager who has come in with a very specific vision of how he wants the game to be played and we have a team that will try everything to implement that. On certain areas we’ve been doing extremely well and no result or no ranking will ever be able to translate that probably.
“We’ve dominated games, been organised, tried to play in a certain way that I always think is the beginning of something better, something special.
“We’ve lacked in key moments and everyone has to take responsibility for that. As long as we recognise that and try to improve on it then we’re still set up for something good. There’s a lot still to come beyond this year.”
With several clubs in the Premier League heading in to each campaign with hopes of lifting the title, Kompany knows the standard required in order to have trophy-laden season.
“Other clubs are trying their best to get to that level as well but I still think a lot of the points we’ve dropped were points that we shouldn’t have dropped and so in that sense it just means we need to improve,” said Kompany.
“The first thing is to understand what is going wrong and if you make that analysis for yourself you can keep working and improving on it. I think clubs like City are geared up to do that and therefore I’m confident. Playing with an idea is definitely a necessity at this level and the rest will come.”
City have four matches remaining in the Premier League, starting with Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace. The Blues are locked in a battle to secure Champions League football for next season and Kompany believes that is giving the side extra motivation.
“We’re not allowed to wind down. We’re obviously aiming for third place and are level on points with Liverpool if we can win our game in hand. It’s down to goal difference so it means it’s down to margins and if anything we have to be more focused than ever.
“We’d have preferred to be tighter to first place perhaps but I’m sure eventually that will be the case. In this case we’re fighting for Champions League places and it’s down to details.”
Having missed so much of the season through injury, the captain is still taking each match as it comes and ensuring he enjoys the experience of leading out his City teammates.
“It’s the best feeling in the world for me. You start playing football dreaming about being in that position and every single game and every minute I get I realise how privileged I am to be there.”
