City’s record-equalling run of wins

This current run, which started away at Bournemouth on August 26, is the first time City have managed 11 straight wins in a single season. The Blues previously recorded 11 straight victories under Manuel Pellegrini between the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns.

And on Tuesday they have the chance to go one better and set a new record of 12 wins a row when they host Wolves in the Carabao Cup last 16.

Here, we take a look back at the brilliant 11-game run that has seen City score 39 goals.

Bournemouth 1-2 City

Charlie Daniels opened the scoring with a brilliant strike – but City equalised when David Silva’s incisive throughball put Gabriel Jesus through and the Brazilian finished neatly.

It was far from a vintage display but Raheem Sterling’s winner in the seventh minute of injury time sealed three points and proved to be the catalyst for a fine run of form.

City 5-0 Liverpool

It was a tight game at the Etihad before Sadio Mane’s red card for a foul on Ederson. City took advantage, scoring five goals without reply as Liverpool were rolled over in straightforward fashion.

Sergio Aguero scored the first, rounding Simon Mignolet after Kevin De Bruyne’s brilliant defence-splitting pass, before a Jesus double put the game beyond doubt.

Leroy Sane’s cameo saw him bag two, including a 25-yard curler into the top corner to make it 5-0.

After a somewhat disjointed first few games, City had suddenly found an extra gear.

Feyenoord 0-4 City

And they continued where they off against Liverpool four days later in Rotterdam with an explosive performance that got their Group F campaign off to a flier.

City were 3-0 up inside 25 minutes thanks to goals from John Stones, Aguero and Jesus, before Stones added another in the second half.

In truth, 4-0 flattered the Dutch side. It’s rare to see such a one-sided Champions League game.

Watford 0-6 City

This was arguably City’s best display of the season so far. Watford, a side currently occupying fifth place in the large, were systematically dismantled in ruthless fashion. It was one of the most devastating and efficent Premier League away performances in recent memory, clear evidence that Guardiola’s ideas are taking hold.

Aguero scored a brilliant hat-trick, with Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi and Sterling added the rest as City hit Watford for six.

West Brom 1-2 City

Guardiola made wholesale changes for the Carabao Cup tie at West Brom – but the result remained the same, with City coming away victorious for the fifth-straight match.

Sane opened the scoring, capping a fine team goal with a cool finish, before Claudio Yacob equalised in the second-half.

But Sane proved to be the match-winner with another superb goal 13 minutes from time. The juggernaut, by this stage, was well and truly in motion.

City 5-0 Palace

City became the first side to score 5+ goals in three consecutive top-flight games in the same season since Blackburn did so in 1958-59 with a thumping 5-0 win over Palace.

Man of the match Sane opened the scoring, with Sterling (2), Aguero and Fabian Delph completing the rout.

Delph’s goal was City 21st in the league after six matches – the Club’s best ever goal return at that stage of a season.

City 2-0 Shakhtar

Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk provided a stern test as City struggled for fluidity in the opening period of the game.

But Kevin De Bruyne’s opener three minutes after half time put City in charge, and Sterling added a second in the 90th minute as City won their opening two Champions League group matches for the first time.

Chelsea 0-1 City

This was vintage City. Chelsea barely laid a glove on Guardiola’s rampant side and how it only ended 1-0 is a mystery. This was as one-sided a game between two top four sides you’re likely to see.

De Bruyne scored the winner with a fine strike from outside the box and City went into the international break top of the table on goal difference.

“They could not play and had to do long balls,” Guardiola said afterwards.

City 7-2 Stoke

City scored seven goals in a Premier League game for only the second time, beating Stoke 7-2 as Jesus (2), Sterling, Silva, Fernandinho, Sane and Bernardo all got on the scoresheet.

The quality of the goals was remarkable, as De Bruyne took home the man-of-the-match award for his breath-taking display in the middle.

“They were quicker, stronger and anticipated things far quicker than us, and in the end we had no answers to the questions they posed to us,” was Stoke boss Mark Hughes’ honest assessment after the game.

City 2-1 Napoli

City made it three Group F wins from three with a 2-1 win against an excellent Napoli side, who came into the match with a 100 per cent record in Serie A this season.

Goals from Sterling and Jesus did the damage – but this was no easy assignment. Napoli provided the sternest test City have faced all season.

City 3-0 Burnley

Saturday’s win over a stubborn Burnley side made it 11 wins in a row, equalling the Club record.

Aguero’s opener saw him become the Club’s joint-highest goalscorer of all time, drawing level with Eric Brook, who set the record in 1938.

Otamendi headed in City second and Sane added another, finishing brilliantly after Ilkay Gundogan’s throughball set him clear.

Sane has both scored and assisted in three of his past four Premier League games and has been involved in nine goals in his past six Premier League games (five goals, four assists).
