The 2018 World Cup finals really took flight on Friday night with a classic encounter between Spain and Portugal which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The result meant that the bragging rights were shared between City duo David Silva and Bernardo Silva after an amazing match which will go down in World Cup history.

The headlines were dominated by Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo who claimed a fabulous hat-trick with his stunning 88th minute free-kick securing a point for the reigning European champions.

With David Silva dovetailing superbly in the Spanish midfield, two goals from Diego Costa and a spectacular strike from Nacho had seen Spain fight back from 2-1 down to take a 3-2 lead in a match which had everything before Ronaldo’s dramatic late intervention.

There was late, late drama in day two’s other games as well.

An 89th minutes header from Jose Gimenez earned Uruguay a 1-0 win over Egypt in the opening encounter in Group A.

Then in Group B’s first match Iran left it even later before securing only their second-ever victory in World Cup finals history as a spectacular 95th minute own goal from Aziz Bouhaddouz earned the Iranians a 1-0 win over Morocco.

There are four matches today in what is the busiest day so far in the tournament and two matches in particular will really capture the imagination of City fans.

Armed with a squad bursting with quality, France are many observers’ tips to go all the way and replicate their 1998 World Cup triumph.

After fighting his way back from a serious injury to return to action in April, Mendy is named on the substitute’s bench. The game kicks-off at 11am and is on the BBC.

The City focus will then switch to Moscow for Argentina’s opening encounter with Iceland who, of course, famously sent England crashing out of Euro 2016.

City duo Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi, who were key figures in our Premier League title success, both look certain to start after boss Jorge Sampaoli took the unusual step of naming his starting side 24 hours in advance.

Kun will be adding to add to his superb international strike-rate of 37 goals from 85 caps as Argentina seek to go one better than four years ago at the 2014 finals in Brazil where La Albiceleste finished runners-up to Germany.

There will be another familiar face for Blues fans too with Willy Caballero selected to start in goal for the South Americans.

It promises to be another fascinating encounter and UK viewers can watch all the action on ITV.

The action then switches to Saransk where Denmark take on Peru in the second clash in Group C with the game being screened live on the BBC.

And rounding off a day of footballing frenzy is the 8pm encounter between Croatia and African giants Nigeria in Kaliningrad. UK viewers can watch all the action on ITV.
