The medal shown belonged to Bert Trautmann and is inscribed to him on the back of the medal (see below).
The idea behind the Football League 100 Legends is simply a list of 100 great association football players who played part or all of their professional career in the English Football League/Premier League football.
Published in 1998, it was to celebrate the Football Association’s centenary year.

The players were selected in 1998 by a panel of journalists, including veteran reporter Bryon Butler, and the list was intended to reflect the League’s history by including players from throughout the preceding 99 seasons.
The Football League also announced plans for a gala dinner later in the season at which surviving legends would receive a specially commissioned award.
Aside from Trautmann, the other players who received medals - some for their City careers and some who played for the Club briefly but still had strong City connections were:
- Billy Meredith
- Peter Doherty
- Frank Swift
- Dennis Law
- Colin Bell
- Trevor Francis
- Peter Schmeichel
