Vincent Kompany hailed City’s spirit and composure after the Blues struck late to claim a priceless 2-1 Champions League Group F win at Hoffenheim.

City recovered from the shock of conceding a first minute goal to the Bundesliga hosts draw level through Sergio Aguero’s first half effort. But despite dominating – and having a strong claim for a penalty turned down – it looked like we might have to settle for a draw.

However, on 87 minutes City’s pressure and resolve was finally rewarded when David Silva struck a superb goal to secure a wonderful victory.

And Belgium defender Kompany believed it was no more than City deserved – and served as the perfect response to last month’s opening group loss at home to Lyon.

“We couldn’t be happier about the performance and the result,” said the City skipper.

“It’s a fantastic win as every away game in the Champions League is such a hard task to get three points.

“It was a tough away game against a team that was well organised, physical and disciplined with a clear game plan.

“They were committing a lot of bodies forward, so we had to be cautious.

“On the counter we had chances and I’d say we dominated because we had possession and chances so it was a good performance.

“It’s a fantastic result and it was the only way to put right the Lyon result and we did that.

“Now we can look forward to the rest of the group matches.”
