At half-time in the fifth group stage game against Bayern Munich, City were 2-1 down at the Etihad and facing elimination from the Champions League.
With just two points on the board, Roma seemed to be heading for the runner-up spot with Pep Guardiola’s German champions already through.
A stirring comeback saw the Blues recover to win 3-2 meaning Roma and City went into the final game of the group both on five points.
City had never won in Italy before, but having been thrown a lifeline against Bayern, Manuel Pellegrini’s side travelled to Rome looking to create a bit of history – and progress to the Round of 16.
Joe Hart was forced to make two fine saves as the hosts, backed by a partisan 54,000-plus crowd sought a breakthrough. And as the teams went in goalless at the break, Roma knew that was a result that would take them through and eliminate the Blues.
However, on the hour, Samir Nasri scored a cracking long-range goal to send 1500 travelling fans wild and four minutes from the end, Pablo Zabaleta sealed victory from close range to send City through.

It was a game City knew that they had to return home from having something to build on.
Free-scoring PSG was always going to be a tricky test for Pellegrini’s side, but it looked as though it was going to be even tougher when Bacary Sagna conceded a penalty on 12 minutes – but Hart saved Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s spot-kick.
It was City who eventually struck first through Kevin De Bruyne, but just three minutes later, Fernando’s poor attempt at a pass gave Ibrahimovic the simplest of equalisers just before the break.
The Ligue 1 champions took the lead for the first-time when Rabiot scored around the hour-mark and for 10 minutes or so, the Blues were hanging on, particularly when Ibrahimovic struck the crossbar – but Fernandinho’s deflected shot on 72 levelled the scores and gave City a priceless second away goal.
Impressive stuff and the value of the draw was increased by the 1-0 return leg home victory for the Blues.
Bayern Munich 2 City 3

Group stage
City travelled to Germany knowing a three-goal win – or two-goal margin with a minimum of four goals scored - in Munich would mean Round of 16 qualification as group winners.
Guardiola’s side had already won 3-1 at the Etihad in the first meeting and were guaranteed qualification to the next phase.
And when the Bundesliga giants opened up a 2-0 lead with only 12 minutes played, the Blues looked set for a long evening.
But City rallied superbly.
First David Silva halved the Germans’ lead on 28 minutes and after the break, an Aleks Kolarov penalty and James Milner goal gave City a 3-2 lead with barely an hour played.
A fourth goal would have seen City top the group (and so avoid Barcelona), and although there were a couple of great opportunities to score again, the game ended in a 3-2 victory for Pellegrini’s side.

Dubbed Europe’s most entertaining sides going into this clash, City knew a win in Naples would rubber-stamp Round of 16 qualification with two games to go.
The Blues had won all three games against Group F opposition and were keen to go into the last games knowing the hard work had been done.
Insigne put the hosts ahead on 21 minutes before Nicolas Otamendi levelled 13 minutes later.
John Stones nodded City ahead just after half-time before Jorginho levelled from the spot just past the hour-mark.
Then, the goal the Blues fans had been waiting for arrived as Sergio Aguero burst forward before finishing with a low shot that confirmed him as the Club’s all-time top goal-scorer.
Raheem Sterling then added a fourth in added time as City completed a thrilling victory.
Sevilla 1 City 3

City travelled to Spain at the halfway point of the group stage campaign but would return home having guaranteed qualification for the Round of 16 with two games to spare.
Though qualification didn’t hang on this game, it was the manner of City’s victory that really impressed.
The Blues took the game to Sevilla from the kick-off and were 2-0 up with just 11 minutes gone thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho.
The hosts halved the deficit on 25 minutes before Wilfried Bony made it 3-1 on 36 minutes to end the scoring and allow the Blues to play out the time that remained in comfort.
