He joined City from Hamilton Academical in 1933 and would remain with the Blues for 15 years, during which he won several medals.

Herd’s first season saw City reach – and lose – the 1933 FA Cup final but return a year later to lift the trophy with a 2-1 win over Portsmouth.
The Charity Shield medal featured here, was won in 1937 and was kindly presented to the Club by Alec’s grandson, Alex.
The Shield victory was City’s first and the 2-0 win over Sunderland was played at Maine Road on 4 November 1937.
Herd and Peter Doherty were on the score-sheet and was played between the top fight champions (City) and the FA Cup holders (Sunderland).
Herd played in a stellar City team that included such Club greats as Doherty, Frank Swift, Matt Busby, Fred Tilson, Sam Cowan and the great Eric Brook.
The Scottish inside forward remained in the north-west, joining Stockport County and staying at Edgeley Park for three seasons.
The medal and its case, plus a signed postcard and a portrait of Herd - whose son went on to play for United - are part of a nice collection of items in the Club archives from the long-serving City forward.
