Pep Guardiola believes his quadruple-chasing Manchester City side have improved again from last season’s record-breaking campaign.

City rewrote the record books last term as we became the first side in Premier League history to break the 100-point barrier in winning the title as well as lifting the Carabao Cup.

Twelve months on, City have already successfully retained the League Cup and enter April still in contention for the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

And asked at his pre-match press conference ahead of the visit of Cardiff City to the Etihad on Wednesday whether he believed City were now a better team than last season, Guardiola asserted he thought the side had improved.

“We judge a team on how many titles they will win, but I’m satisfied to think we are better than last season,” said the City manager.

“We’ve had more time together. We have improved some things better and we do better things than last season, but at the end we will be judged on the titles we win.

“The nicest thing is being here at this stage of the season.”

With City entering a potentially season-defining month with at least eight games spread across three competitions, the boss was also quizzed once more about the possibility of achieving would be a historic and unprecedented quadruple.

Following Wednesday night’s visit of the Bluebirds, City then switch attention to Saturday’s FA Cup-semi final with Brighton at Wembley before we then face the challenge of a Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Spurs.

Rather than look too far ahead however, Guardiola insisted that the message to his players was a simple one – to focus solely on the next game in front of them.

Asked about the possibility of achieving the quadruple, the boss insisted: “I say many times, the reality is there but I said to the players: forget about it.

“In one week, three days, we can lose all three titles - I know in your head is we can win all titles, but the next game is Cardiff then prepare for Brighton and then Tottenham.

“It’s nice but it’s game by game, then after we go to Selhurst Park – an incredible stadium. When we win, we’re happy, when we lose, we prepare for next season.”

And asked whether he was urging the players not to think about achieving a potential quadruple, Guardiola added: “I’m not in the mind of my players fans or club to say what they think.

“But from my experience, nobody has ever done it before, the legendary teams like Liverpool in the 80s, United with Ferguson, Mourinho with Chelsea, Wenger with Arsenal, nobody has done it. It’s so tough.”
