The German midfielder has proved to be a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad over the past three seasons and was an instrumental figure in our historic Fourmidables campaign of last year.
A 2016 arrival from Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing after taking over as City manager and he has since made 114 appearances, scoring 17 goals.
A hugely talented, creative midfielder who marries intelligence and industry to great effect, the 28-year-old also demonstrated his versatility last term by impressively operating in the holding midfield role on numerous occasions.
‘I am very happy to have signed the new contract,” Gundogan told mancity.com.
“I have hugely enjoyed the last three years here at City and everyone at the Club has helped make me feel at home from my very first day.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of this team, playing the style of football we do and winning trophies. It’s very difficult to do that and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
“I’m really excited about what we can go on to achieve in the next few seasons.”
Commenting on Gundogan’s new contract, City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: “Ilkay’s new deal is more excellent news for our Club.
“He has shown how important he is to the team and has played a huge part in everything that we have achieved so far.
“We are thrilled he has committed his long-term future to Manchester City.”
Gundogan gave notice of his quality, vision and prodigious work-rate in his first season at City, including two memorable goals in our 3-1 Champions League group win over Barcelona before his campaign was then cut short by a knee injury.
After fighting his way back to full fitness, he then went on to emerge as a pivotal figure in our remarkable 2017/18 campaign, when City became the first English side to reach 100 points, lifting the Premier League and also tasting Carabao Cup glory.
Gundogan’s impact came to the fore again last term as he and his City colleagues created yet more football history by becoming the first team to lift all four English trophies, with Ilkay proving a particular vital figure in the defining final third of the season.
