Pep Guardiola hailed the quality of City’s movement, as the Blues closed the gap atop the Premier League table once more by defeating Wolves 3-0.

Gabriel Jesus netted twice in the first half before a Conor Coady own-goal sealed the points for the Champions, who prevented Nuno Espírito Santo’s side from registering a single shot on target, in a thoroughly dominant display at the Etihad Stadium.

The opening goal in particular earned deserved acclaim, as the hosts carved open the visitors’ defence with a glorious Aymeric Laporte through-ball, played into the path of Leroy Sane.

The German raced onto the pass and delivered the perfect cross to Gabriel Jesus to slide onto, converting his 11th goal in his last eight Etihad appearances – and Guardiola was delighted.

“The game 11 v 11 was quite similar to 11 v 10,” he stated.

“We made a fantastic first goal with the action – the movement and the pass.

“It’s so difficult to defend our opponents. It’s so tough when they have five at the back but the quality (to break down the defence) – KDB came in and has this quality; Riyad Mahrez also.

“Cesc Fabregas for example was one of the best players I saw do that. Our wingers have these qualities.

“After that (the first goal), we forgot to move the ball more into the box. We arrived in the final third quite easily but we didn’t make movements to attack the ball.

“In that last few minutes, with Kevin De Bruyne and his special quality, we played the way we have to play. We have to keep doing it over and over, winning the second balls.

“We didn’t concede many counter attacks and Wolves put in incredible fast players for the last 20 minutes. They can punish you - we’ve seen it against Tottenham and Chelsea.

“I’m very pleased and I’m pretty aware how tough it is.”

Guardiola also reserved praise for Ederson – though not for his clean sheet but his sweeper cameo!

“I’m so pleased because he lives high and defends with our back four,” he added.

“Adama Traore is one of the fastest players I’ve ever seen in my life!

“To handle the risk, it’s not easy. Our build-up is better and it is what it is.

“We love Ederson the way he is!”

With De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero named on the bench, before being introduced in the second half, Guardiola was queried on the pair’s fitness but explained the decision was tactical rather than forced.

“It was not for injuries - I have an incredible squad and other players, who deserved to play,” he replied.

“We spoke about that. One of my favourite players Phil Foden wasn’t there (in the squad).

“To play, the players know they have to be good. They know that.

“Today, I decided to go with players like Bernardo, Aymeric, John...

“I will try to be involved with everyone. Everybody plays and has been a part. I don’t like to play just 11 players in four games.

“Everybody has to be ready. Some play more than others but we are still in four competitions and everyone is going to play.”

The Blues boss also urged his side not to look too far ahead or be distracted by other results, as City continue to chase league leaders Liverpool.

“We cannot play Liverpool so we can’t do anything about them - all we can do is win our games,” he said.

“We can control what we do and that’s being there (challenging for the title) but if we won’t win, then they will be Champions and I will congratulate Jurgen.

“That’s why we have to win. We have incredible numbers after what we did last season.

“I don’t have a crystal ball to know (how many points City will need). I said to the players: don’t watch the calendar for the Liverpool games because when that happens, you get distracted and lose games.

“They are one team and have done better so far but we have to be there until the end.

“Our next game is Huddersfield and they’ll have a new manager. We have to focus on what we can do to beat them.

“The only thing we can do is to be there and win our games. I don’t like to play on Mondays, when everyone else has played but that’s what I’m very pleased with the game today.”
