Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring Blues reached the 100-milestone mark with Danilo’s deflected opener at Huddersfield Town on Sunday, with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane going on to add a goal each in the 3-0 win.
This was City’s 35th match of the campaign – 29 have so far ended in victory, two have been drawn and four have ended in defeat with all three Premier League losses coming within the space of 19 December days.
The 102 goals in 35 games have been achieved three games faster than the 102 the Blues scored last season in all competitions.
Ironically, it was another Brazilian that scored the 100th goal last year - Fernandinho - during a 3-0 win over West Brom.
Despite this, the champions are slightly down on Premier League goals scored, with 62 to date this campaign and 67 at the same stage last year (23 games).
In cup competitions, however, the Blues have bagged 40 this term compared with 35 at the same point last season.
The 2013/14 campaign saw Manuel Pellegrini’s City set the bar with 100 in all competitions coming in 34 games – so the Blues now hold the top three positions in the quickest to the century list during the Premier League era.
Can City set any new records this term?
With 15 Premier League games to go, the Blues would need another 45 goals to top last season’s 106 – an average of three per game and though not impossible, a tall order.
The 144 goals scored in total during 2017/18, however, is more realistic.
In addition to the 15 Premier League matches remaining, there are cup games against Burton and Burnley to come as well as the Round of 16 two-legged matches against Schalke in the Champions League.
That equates to 19 games to bag 43 goals – an average of 2.26 goals per game would then be needed.
If the Blues can successfully negate all the upcoming cup matches, there will be at least another four games to add.
The best-case scenario – City reach the final of every cup competition – would mean 14 additional games between now and the last match on the calendar (Champions League final) and 29 games to play and total a mind-boggling 64 games all told - the average goals per game needed would then drop to a manageable 1.48 goals!
It’s certainly not impossible, but a huge ask for any group of players, even one as talented as this City side.
But it’s not just domestically that the Blues have excelled.
City became the first team in Europe’s top five divisions to reach a century of goals this campaign, leaving a host of illustrious clubs in our wake.
PSG are doing their best to catch Pep’s men, recording a 9-0 Ligue 1 win over Guingamp at the weekend to put them in second spot.
The Parisians have now scored 90 this season, with La Liga giants Barcelona next some 12 goals behind on 78.
Completing the top scorers in the quintet of European leagues, Bayern Munich and Atalanta (Bundesliga and Serie A) have 62 apiece.
Premier League leaders Liverpool have bagged 65 goals to date.
