Although the youngster’s night in Rio was blemished by two yellow cards, the 22-year-old earned rave reviews for his first half performance.

Gabriel Jesus has now netted seven goals in nine games and asserts he feels settled and in fine form, having learnt from his experiences.

Reflecting on his impressive displays over the tournament, he stated: “I don’t see it as a ‘turning up’ – I learnt a lot after the World Cup.

“I came better prepared mentally and professionally.”

The Brazilian also explained how his time at City had aided his development.

“I worked hard at City,” he continued.

“In the beginning, it was a bit complicated but with the help of my family, friends and colleagues, I could focus again on my football.”

Buoyed to have played such a pivotal role in his country’s success, the striker now aims to enjoy a well-deserved rest this summer before returning to Club duty and helping City, as the ‘Fourmidables’ look to build on our record-breaking 2018/19 campaign.

“I’m very happy to be part of this group,” he declared. “We deserve a lot.

“We achieved this, sweating our shirts! Now, we must celebrate because we deserve it.”
