Shakhtar XI:

Formation: 4-3-3

City will use Joao Cancelo and Angelino down the flanks this evening, with Otamendi and Fernandinho in central defence.

Rodri will take the anchor midfield role with Gundogan, De Bruyne completing the midfield trio.

Bernardo, Sterling and Jesus will be our forward three.

Jesus and Sterling to share striker duties?

Sergio Aguero’s unspecified injury looks set to keep him out for the next four or five games meaning Gabriel Jesus is the only recognised senior striker.

The young Brazilian has impressed whenever he has played this season, but such is Aguero’s prolific record, he will be expected to weigh in with a few goals during Kun’s absence.

Jesus has a voracious work ethic and will be hoping to give Pep Guardiola a headache when the Argentine is back to full fitness – but the City boss has already indicated he may use Raheem Sterling in that role.

A more central Sterling is even more of a threat and the England forward has 18 goals from 23 games this season fro club and country – and that tally could (maybe should?) be a couple of goals higher but for a couple of very dubious VAR calls.

Impressive stuff.

Stats

City have won four out of the five meetings so far with Shakhtar, with the Ukrainians losing both previous visits to the Etihad with an aggregate of 8-0.

City have won 11 of the last 13 group stage Champions League clashes at the Etihad and have won the last six home games in the competition.

The Blues need a point to progress to the Champions League Round of 16 and a victory would also win Group C with one game to spare.
