Dietmar Hamann has exclusively explained to mcfc.co.uk his reasons for signing for Manchester City and his decision not to join Bolton.

The German international midfielder has completed his transfer to the Blues, signing a two-year contract. His decision to bolster Stuart Pearce’s midfield comes after he initially chose to leave Liverpool for Bolton Wanderers.

He told mcfc.co.uk in an exclusive interview today “I had agreed to join Bolton, but I quickly realised that going to them would not be the right move for me. I told Bolton my feelings immediately and they understood my decision.

“When I became aware of press reports suggesting that City were interested in me, I was excited at the prospect of joining this club and knew this is where I want to be. I am happy that the situation has been sorted quickly.”

Hamann, 32, initially moved to Bolton from Liverpool, where he spent seven years at the Anfield club capturing a string of honours, and scored from the penalty spot in both last year’s Champions League and this year’s FA Cup final shoot-outs.

Capped 57 times by his country, ‘Didi’ also holds the distinction of being the last player to score at the old Wembley, his free-kick being the only goal of the game when Germany played England in October 2000.

“When I spoke with Stuart Pearce I immediately knew that City was the club for me. Mr Pearce is an ambitious manager, and this is an excellent club with a good squad of players.”

Hamann trained with the first team squad today and said he immediately felt at home in Carrington. “Everything here at City is geared for the club to make progress and I want to play my part in bringing success to this football club.

“I really enjoyed the seven years I had at Liverpool and I want to thank everyone connected to the club because they made me feel welcome from day one, but everything moves on and I am looking forward to the new challenge here at City.”
