The Bulgarian winger hit the net twice during last Saturday’s thrilling draw, and the Blues boss thinks his summer acquisition is finally finding the form that first caught his eye.
Sven says, “I knew, and the coaching staff knew before we bought him, that Martin was a great player. He’s been fantastic in Spain for Atletico Madrid and for his national team as well, but he’s getting fitter and fitter now as well.
“He’s got pace, he’s a great crosser of the ball and he has a superb shot as we saw at Fulham. He’s one of those electrifying players, something happens when he gets the ball and it’s exciting for fans to see that kind of player.
“Getting two goals away from home as well was great for us and for him. He’s of a very high standard and I think he’s going to get better for us.”
Turning to the visit of Newcastle United on Saturday, Sven dismissed criticisms of the style of play from Sam Allardyce sides, and anticipating a hard game against the fifth placed Magpies he added:
“I don’t think Sam’s ever listened to the criticism, he had exceptionally good results with Bolton so when it comes to the style of football, who cares? Bolton went into Europe with him, which was a good effort, so he must be a good manager.
“Newcastle are playing good football, and so did Bolton at times. They used what they had well, and that’s what managers are there for.”
Sven would like a greater margin of victory than the 1-0 scoreline that has settled all City’s home wins so far, but he’s also pragmatic about the need to secure three points first and foremost.
“We’ll always try to play our kind of football, but your opponents will always make it difficult for you. I’d be happy to have 1-0 on Saturday and the three points, but we will try to play good football.”
