Bolton’s main threats on the City goal came from an early Steinsson header against the post and Martin Petrov’s goal-line clearance late on, but in between the Swiss midfielder had turned in another hard-working performance before flying off for a midweek international friendly against Germany.
Of the draw, Gelson said: “Obviously we wanted to win this game, and we didn’t but even so I think it was a good point because Bolton are battling to stay in the Premier League, so it was always going to be a very difficult game.
“We had to fight just as much as them on Saturday, we were a bit unlucky not to score a couple of times when we did have it, we have to learn to get that one goal in games like this. We just have to keep working at it.
“It could be an important point, that’s why it was better to come away with something – a clean sheet away and a point is OK.”

Results elsewhere on Saturday, particularly the defeats for Portsmouth and Aston Villa, saw the points spread between the quartet of clubs below Everton narrow to just one.
A win for City would have put them sixth in the table, but Gelson is putting the ‘what ifs?’ to one side and insisting the team concentrate on the game at St Andrews next Saturday.
“I think sometimes we are talking too much about it (Europe), we have to concentrate just on the next game. We need to think about Birmingham and then on Chelsea, if we can get through those then we can think about Europe. But our focus should just be on the next game.”
