The Blues’ win at Goodison Park, which followed the 4-2 victory at home to West Brom, keeps them in the hunt for seventh place, currently occupied by Fulham.
The last two weekends, coupled with the valiant attempt to get past Hamburg, gives City momentum going into Saturday’s important home clash with Blackburn Rovers, and it is this that the Manager want to keep going right the way through to the end of the season.
He says, “It was an important win, we want to finish the season strongly. Past history suggests that City have not covered themselves in glory at this time of the year, and we wanted to address that.
“After Hamburg, maybe people thought that maybe that was the end of the season, that players and management would switch off, but that was never our thought. We worked hard to keep everybody focussed and trying to achieve our highest position in the Premier League by finishing in seventh. We’re in place to challenge for that, we are very much in the mix and working hard to get there.”
Despite the recent league wins, City are still behind Fulham and West Ham, and Hughes is wary of how any of the sides chasing seventh could make it their own with a couple of decent results like City’s recent ones.
He continues, “That will happen at this time of the year, teams will switch off and there will be opportunities. You face teams that are safe or are not involved in Europe, and you can pick up points.
“But, that’s not been the case so much this year because of the way the league has shaped up, although we think there are chances for us to pick up points in the remaining games. That’s what we are aiming to do, because we aim to finish strongly.”
