Kolo Toure is hoping that his flirtation with the captain’s armband is not a one night stand.

The man who said he could ‘feel the love’ when he signed from Arsenal would like nothing more than to cement the relationship and inherit the job on a full time basis if and when it becomes available.

And he is hoping to skipper the side all the way to Wembley after City kicked off their Carling Cup campaign with a professional dismissal of Championship side Crystal Palace last night.

“I was a very proud occasion to lead the side out at Selhurst Park,” he declared.

“It was a big moment for me to lead out Manchester City. If the manager asks me to be captain regularly then I would be delighted to accept because I am really happy to be at this football club and I think as a group we can bring a lot of success here.”

Toure and his teammates are yet to concede a goal in competitive action this season and if you throw in the Joan Gamper Trophy win at the home of the European Champions Barcelona have now gone four games on the trot without seeing the ball enter their own net.

However, there were times at Palace when Kolo admits they came close to losing that proud record.

“It was a good win because the first half was tough,” he confessed. “Palace played well but we knew because of the pace at which they had played they would tire and in the end of we could have scored more goals.

“I have not played much in this competition in the last two years because the manager at Arsenal took a different approach but we want to go as far as we can. It is very important for us.  This win helped us maintain our momentum because we have another really important contest at Portsmouth on Sunday.

“We have four clean sheets now in succession including the victory in Barcelona and that is not an accident. We work really hard as a team. It is not just the back four but everyone who is working hard and that is important to us and for our spirit.”
