Winger Adam Johnson, who enhanced his growing England claims with a fine display, reckoned: “We could have had a few more - the rain did them a favour, the way we were playing.
If the pitch had stayed in the condition it was in the first half, it might have been even more goals. I’m not used to being three up after six minutes, but I’m enjoying it!

And he admitted: “I had a little word with the referee a couple of times to see how long he would allow before it was called off. He didn’t say anything, he was just laughing!”
Emmanuel Adebayor, who grabbed two goals including the quickfire opener, maintained that despite City’s biggest victory of the season, he feared Burnley would present problems.
He said: “We knew it was going to be tough and that we had to start well - we managed that, and in the first 15 minutes or so we took our chances, we played well.
“We had to show them that we were here to win the game! We are all fighting to finish in the top four, and we have the spirit to achieve that. We have to keep fighting now.
“We have got Birmingham next week, we still have to go to Arsenal, and Tottenham have to come to us - we needed these three points, and we have got to try and win all our games.”
Manager Roberto Mancini said: “I’m very happy. We scored three quickly and after that it was finished. We had to win because it was such a good chance for us after Tottenham lost.
“We played very well, but in the second half it was impossible to play football on the ground. We still have six difficult games so I don’t think we’re favourites, but we are in position.”
