City’s longest-serving player is excited by the Blues’ prospects this season and wants to play a big part in any future successes.

Shaun Wright-Phillips’ association with City began in 1998 and he is now in his third different decade with the club.

He started at Tottenham – proof that he is very much part of Roberto Mancini’s plans this campaign – and is committed to helping the Blues end their long quest for silverware in the coming months.

“Everyone knows you have to work hard to stay in this team and it was great to start the first game of the season,” said the England midfielder.

“There are plenty of games and while we have a big squad, there will be opportunities to play.

“On a personal level, I never worry – I’m always up for the challenge, especially at City, and will keep my head down and work as hard as I can to play as often as I can.

I’m really happy here and I’m not going anywhere – this could be a great season for the club and I don’t want to miss a thing

After getting the nod ahead of Adam Johnson on Saturday, Shaun admits he had the chance to start the season on a real with a goal and possibly as a match-winner, though he accepts a draw was a fair result overall.

“It was a great chance, but I just felt the ball was never going to come down for me and by the time it did, one of their defenders was able to get a challenge in,” he said.

“Spurs are a great side who have been together for the best part of three years. They did well last year and they played exactly the way we expected them to, so we knew we’d have to defend well, which we did, and we were happy to come away with a point.

“Now we’ve got a Europa League tie coming up and then Liverpool next Monday - the games will come thick and fast but it should stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.”

There are a limited number of tickets remaining for next Monday’s clash with Liverpool, a game which could see new signing Mario Balotelli make his City debut.
