Ben Mee’s Leicester recorded a fifth successive win to bolster their chances of promotion to the Premier League. A last minute winner helped the Foxes beat Bristol City 2-1 and they now sit just two points off the play-off spots.
That result leaves sixth placed Leeds looking over their shoulders. Though David Gonzales played no part in the game, the Whites dropped two vital points in their 2-2 draw with promotion rivals Norwich.
Another side firmly in the mix is Craig Bellamy’s Cardiff and they too suffered a set-back. Bellamy was unable to prevent his side dropping out of the automatic promotion spots as they were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Kieran Trippier’s Barnsley remain firmly in mid-table following their 1-0 loss to struggling Portsmouth, while Abdi Ibrahim played just seven minutes of Scunthorpe’s goalless draw with Derby. The Irons couldn’t build on their shock mid-week win over Forest and now sit six points adrift of safety.
In La Liga action, Emmanuel Adebayor and Felipe Caicedo faced each other in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Levante – though they were never actually on the pitch at the same time. Despite being in fantastic goal-scoring form, Caicedo couldn’t find a way through Madrid’s multi-million pound defence and was replaced with a quarter of an hour left. Adebayor entered the fray three minutes later with the tie already settled.
Javan Vidal wasn’t even on the bench for League Two leaders Chesterfield whose 2-0 win over Lincoln was their first in six and helped them stretch their lead at the top to eight points.
Finally, a week after City’s defeat at Old Trafford, Vladimir Weiss suffered his own derby day heartbreak. The Slovakian watched on from the bench as Rangers were beaten 3-0 by Celtic and fell even further behind their rivals in the race for the Scottish Premier League.
