The Blues eased to a 3-0 win after waiting patiently for their chances, and now they know that a win in Napoli later this month will be enough to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League.
A brace from Yaya Toure came either side of a penalty from Mario Balotelli on the stroke of half-time in a game where the home side rarely troubled Joe Hart.
Kompany declared that, “We still put in a good shift, we just did everything as we planned. We didn’t do anything crazy, we were patient and it paid off for us.
The first goal was key, but in the Champions league this was defensively our strongest performance, and our strikers are lethal on their day. They did a great job again today.
“We’re scoring goals in nearly every game, there are a lot of partnerships and that’s a good thing because we can change a lot of players and not lose any strength.
“We always thought if we do our job properly we’re as strong as anyone so we don’t need to look too much at the other teams. It’s a hard group, but if we do what we have to do we can win any game. Napoli will be a big game but that’s why you play in the Champions League.”
Roberto Mancini was satisfied but already eyeing another away trip, this time to QPR in the Premier League this weekend.
“We want to play as well as possible, but every game is hard - and we have another one in 60 hours! We’ll change some players, but if you want to play at this level that’s what happens.”
And the Manager also shook off a bump on the head, sustained when he jumped up in the first half - only to connect with the roof of the dug-out!
“It’s sore, I took a hard knock,” he laughed. “I did the same here five years ago, but I’ll be fit for Saturday!”
