Defensive trio Ryan McGivern, Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee went head-to-head in Championship action this weekend as Bristol City hosted Burnely.

Despite conceding their first half lead early after the break, McGivern’s City ran out 3-1 winners to extend their unbeaten streak to three games and cut the gap between them and safety to just three points.

Mee and Trippier continue to look over their shoulders with a mere five points now separating the Clarets from the drop.

Fellow Blues Abdul Razak and Greg Cunningham also met at the weekend as Portsmouth romped to a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest – the Ivorian midfielder played over an hour for Pompey, while Cunningham continued his comeback from injury with a further 90 minutes for the losing side.

Reece Wabara started for Ipswich as they slipped to a third straight defeat in their 3-2 home meeting with Doncaster, but Alex Nimely played no part of Middlesbrough’s win over Watford as they moved to within a point of the coveted automatic promotion spots.

Managerless Leicester continue to struggle, with Michael Johnson appearing only in the final 15 minutes of their 1-0 loss to Leeds, yet not as badly as Rochdale in League One who went down 3-1 at the hands of MK Dons.

Having moved last week, EDS striker Harry Bunn made his Football League debut as a second half substitute for the Steve Eyre’s relegation-threatened side

Luca Scapuzzi lasted just eight minutes of his Oldham Athletic debut after he was tactically subbed as a result of the Latics’ keeper being sent off. Andreas Mancini came on as an 88th-minute sub in the 2-0 home defeat to Bury.

Emmanuel Adebayor was on hand to cut back for Jermaine Defoe to complete the scoring in Spurs’ hard fought 3-1 conquest of Fulham – their seventh victory in eight Premier League games – while like City’s own Belgian defender, Dedryck Boyata, was missing this weekend for Bolton’s 5-0 drubbing of Stoke.

Elsewhere, Abdi Ibrahim’s Nijmegen proved too strong for John Guidetti’s Feyenoord as they claimed three points in their Eredivisie clash.

The Swede’s side are now without a win in three and following last week’s 6-0 trouncing at the hands of Groningen, sit as far down the table as eighth. Meanwhile, three points have pulled Nijmegen four points clear of the bottom three.

Loris Karius and Roque Santa Cruz were both absent for their respective sides, yet Vladimir Weiss’ Espanyol claimed a point with a goalless draw against City’s Champions League opponents Villarreal.

Brought on just before the hour mark, Weiss couldn’t provide that extra creative spark, but his side clung on to claim a point despite going down to ten men with quarter of an hour remaining.
