Following a rare start during midweek, Michael Johnson made his first league appearance for Leicester in their weekend meeting with Cardiff.

In a repeat of last week’s Carling Cup tie, even Johnson’s addition in the 74th minute couldn’t help the Foxes find a way past the Bluebirds as the game ended goalless.

It was a similarly disappointing weekend for defensive trio Ben Mee, Kieran Trippier and Ryan McGivern.

While McGivern’s Bristol City extended their winless streak to five games with a 1-1 draw at home to Hull, Mee was dropped to the bench for Burnley’s meeting with top of the table Southampton.

Trippier retained his place in the starting XI, but he couldn’t prevent his side surrendering the lead and being forced to share the spoils and there was no better luck for Ahmed Benali as his Rochdale side were beaten 2-0 at Notts County.

Back in Premier League action, Dedryck Boyata was replaced by David Wheater ahead of his side’s 3-0 defeat by Arsenal, only to be called upon as a substitute in the 56th minute, following Wheater’s dismissal.

One player whose starting place is in no doubt, however, is Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togolese striker pounced on an early Wigan mistake to set-up Spurs’ first during their 2-1 win.

Newly promoted Betis continue to make waves in La Liga, with Roque Santa Cruz’s midweek double against Zaragoza moving his side a point clear of Barcelona at the top of the Spanish Primera League, but they wasted the chance to extend their lead at the summit after slipping up 1-0 against lowly Getafe.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Vladimir Weiss played no part in Espanyol’s 3-1 loss at Levante.

Across Europe, John Guidetti played 71 minutes for Feyenoord, but couldn’t find the net as they surrendered the lead and their unbeaten record to top of the table AZ Alkmaar, while Abdi Ibrahim wasn’t involved at all in NEC’s 2-0 defeat by RKC Waalwijk.

Loris Karius’ Mainz side continued their poor form without the German teenager as they slipped to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, while Mohammed Abu and Omar Elabdellaoui aided Stromgodset to a first win in eight - beating Stabaek 1-0.

And in Scotland, David Gonzalez returned for Aberdeen, but despite a steady performance, conceded with only minutes remaining as they were beaten 1-0 by high flying Motherwell.
