The England midfielder will be backed by City, The PFA, Nike and EA Sports – among many others – as he aims to raise funds through a series of events, golf days and sponsorship in order to help others.
The main aim of the James Milner Foundation (JMF) is to promote healthy recreation for the benefit of young people in the United Kingdom by the development, improvement and provision of opportunities in sports, in particular football, rugby and cricket.
The JMF will have the backing of patrons including Alan Shearer OBE, Faye White MBE, Kevin Sinfield, James Anderson MBE, Mark Cueto, Steve Harmison MBE, Patrick Vieira and Gordon Taylor OBE.
“I’m privileged to be in a position to launch a charitable foundation that I hope will benefit a lot of people in years to come,” said Milner at the official launch in Manchester on Monday.
“The aim is to raise funds that will help people nationally and particularly in Manchester and Yorkshire through a number of sporting initiatives. This includes the NSPCC, Help for Heroes and in view of the recent news about Stiliyan Petrov, we’ll also be raising money for a leukaemia charity.”
Returning to football matters, Milner admitted he had enjoyed watching City dismantle Norwich at the weekend, even though he didn’t play a part in the game on this occasion.
“Everyone wants to play but the manager has to pick the team he thinks is best for that particular game and you can’t argue with a 6-1 win,” he said.
“I thought we were excellent on Saturday and we are all part of the team so I enjoyed watching the lads play some fantastic football. It was good to hear the banter between the two sets of fans, too – it’s a long way to go but our support was fantastic from start to finish.
