Joleon Lescott believes City’s trip to face Wigan Athletic on Wednesday will be anything but an easy ride.

Roberto Martinez’s side have started to climb the table and have a reputation of playing good football and being hard to beat at the DW Stadium, as proved by the Blues’ narrow victory there last season.

Though the England defender doesn’t expect to be in the starting line-up after a series of solid displays in central defence from Matija Nastasic, he is hoping to be involved at some stage of the game after recovering from injury.

“Wigan gave us a really tough game last season and we just edged the game 1-0 and were hanging on towards the end to be fair,” said Lescott.

“They always seem to play better against top teams and have a lot of talent in their side plus a very good manager who likes his team to play attractive football.

“They proved that against United last season when they did us a massive favour in the title race by beating them last April, but full deserved it so we can’t and wouldn’t underestimate them

“These games are a chance to showcase how good they can be and occasionally they really surprise people like they did by beating Spurs away last month.

“I’ve won there a number of times with Everton and City so it’s not been a bad ground for me, but it’s going to be hard for me to break back into the team with Matija playing so well at the moment, but if I’m called upon to do a job, I’m fit and ready to play.”

Lescott also praised the City fans who he believes are among the best in the business.

“I think the City fans have been brilliant towards me and the backing they’ve given me, particularly last season and this year, has been fantastic.

“I got a great reception when I was just warming up against Real Madrid and you don’t forget things like that. Hopefully they see someone who has and will always give 100% every time I pull on the shirt and appreciate me for that reason.

“If I’m picked against Wigan or Everton at the weekend, I’ll be trying my hardest for them as I always do because fans like ours deserve nothing less than the best.”
