Team news

City

Pep Guardiola confirmed that both Ilkay Gundogan and Nicolas Otamendi were ready for the match.

Kevin De Bruyne is ruled out with ligament damage which he sustained in last week’s Carabao Cup win over Fulham.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee, having sustained an Achilles tendon injury. The Chilean ‘keeper underwent scans, which confirmed a rupture in the tendon of his left foot.

Shakhtar

Ivan Ordets (thigh), Maksym Malyshev (unknown) and Fernando (ankle) all look unlikely to feature.

The last time

The Blues last met the Ukrainian outfit at the end of October in their third Group F game.

City swatted Shakhtar to the side with a dominant performance resulting in a 3-0 win at the Metalist Stadium.

Devastating counter-attacks, creativity in abundance, defensive steel and clinical finishing – it was one of the Blues best Champions League performances yet with the Ukrainian champions well-beaten on their own turf for the first time by an English team.

David Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo were all on the scoresheet and completed a comprehensive 3-0 win in Kharkiv.

Group F form

City are top of the Group F table; Shakhtar are bottom - four points behind the Blues.

Having opened with an unexpected 2-1 loss at home to Lyon, City won by the same scoreline at Hoffenheim in their second fixture with David Silva scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute. The Blues then secured a 3-0 win over Fonseca’s side to move to the summit of the table, just one point ahead of Lyon.

Shakhtar’s first two games both finished 2-2 against Lyon and Hoffenheim, before missing out to City at the Metalist stadium.
