Team news
City
City have announced our travelling party.
Fabian Delph (knee) and Ilkay Gundogan (hamstring) are unavailable. The Germany midfielder limped off against Hoffenheim in our 2-1 Champions League victory. Danilo (ankle) is also absent, having sustained a knock on international duty.
Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee, having sustained an Achilles tendon injury. The Chilean ‘keeper underwent scans, which confirmed a rupture in the tendon of his left foot.
Shakhtar
Taison (knee ligaments), Ivan Ordets (thigh) and Marlos (unspecified) will miss the game, while Dentinho (unspecified) and Ismaily (unspecified) are also doubts.
The last time...
The two sides last met in December 2017 in the final group game, with the Blues having already qualified.
The Ukrainian outfit triumphed 2-1, courtesy of goals from Bernard and Ismaily, while Sergio Aguero struck an injury time penalty.
City had won the home encounter 2-0 in September, thanks to Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling strikes.
Pep Guardiola preview
“We have still 12 points to play for. It’s in our hands to go through to the next stage and compete and to make something in this competition, you have to live these kind of situations.
“To win this competition, it is not enough just to want it. Many circumstances have to happen and you have to have experience – still, we don’t have enough in some moments.
“Every game we play is a new experience. We are going to get it but wanting is not enough. You have to have to desire of the media, the club, the Chairman, the owner, the fans… everybody wanting to push to be closer to achieve the next stages.
Shakhtar boss Paulo Fonseca preview
“Will it be difficult? Yes. We understand how strong an opponent is collectively and individually. He is difficult to resist.
“Perhaps, in certain segments, we will be more time to defend, to be without a ball. But at the slightest opportunity we plan to take the initiative and show our football.
“We must be attentive absolutely in everything. We know very well how strong City is and what these performers are able to do: at any moment each of them can unbalance our game. You need to have full concentration in all aspects.”

Group F form
City are second in the Group F table; Shakhtar are third - one point behind the Blues.
Having opened with an unexpected 2-1 loss at home to Lyon, City won by the same scoreline at Hoffenheim in their second fixture with David Silva scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute.
Shakhtar’s first two games both finished 2-2, with the Ukrainian side twice coming from behind to draw with Hoffenheim on matchday one – the German side’s Champions League debut – before letting slip a two-goal lead at Lyon last time out.
Stats
• The teams have met twice before - both in the Champions League group stage
• The matchday one loss at home to Lyon is City’s only defeat in our last 19 matches in all competitions (W15 D3), since a 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool in last season’s Champions League quarter-final second leg.
• The Blues were 5-0 winners at home to Burnley on Saturday - our second win by that scoreline in the last four Premier League matches, and fifth successive clean sheet in the league. The English Champions have conceded only three goals in our first nine Premier League games this season.
• City have won two of their last four European away games, losing the other two.
• The Manchester club picked up six points away from home in last season’s group stage, winning at Feyenoord (4-0) and Napoli (4-2) before being beaten at Shakhtar.
• City’s record in Ukraine is W1 L2, the victory a 3-1 success at Dynamo Kyiv in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16.
• Shakhtar won all four of their home matches in last season’s competition, beating Napoli, Feyenoord and City in the group stage. The Donetsk club have lost only one of their last 15 home matches in Europe (W11 D3). They have not kept a clean sheet, however, in any of the last six.
• The Ukrainians’ record European defeat was a 7-0 loss at Guardiola’s Bayern München in the 2014/15 round of 16. The Pitmen lost four of their five fixtures against Barcelona when Guardiola was in charge, including the 2009 UEFA Super Cup (0-1).
• Shakhtar are unbeaten at home to English visitors (W5 D2); the Pitmen’s record against Premier League clubs, home and away, is W5 D3 L6.
• Paulo Fonseca’s men began this season with a 1-0 loss to Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian Super Cup on 21 July. That and the 1-0 loss against the same opponents in Kyiv on 3 August are the only domestic games Shakhtar have lost this season.
• Shakhtar have scored 26 goals in their last nine league games, conceding five.
• Summer arrival Júnior Moraes has scored 12 goals in 15 games for Shakhtar in all competitions.
• The Pitmen are undefeated in their last 11 games in all competitions, winning 1-0 against Desna Chernihiv on Friday thanks to Maycon’s 88th-minute free-kick. Shakhtar had had Olarenwaju Kayode sent off midway through the second half.
