Shakhtar Donetsk

Luis Castro confirmed Taison is available, whilst Khocholava and Totovytskyi are sidelined.

Manager preview

“It’s an incredible challenge with just one central defender, Fernandinho and maybe Eric Garcia and Taylor Harwood-Bellis will come forward for the next few months.

“What we will not do is complain that they are not able to play

“Football is not how you handle good situations, but how you handle bad ones.

“We won seven titles and no one gave us anything, we did it ourselves. I am ready for the challenge. I like this situation.”

Bernardo on the UCL

“In a way, it’s the trophy we are missing.

“Obviously, we want to keep going and keep winning things in England. The Premier League is the most important trophy by far and then obviously, the cups if we can.

“The Champions League is a special competition – it’s very difficult to win it – but we want to try and do better than the last two seasons and I think we can do it.”

Kevin De Bruyne on the UCL

“I think we played brilliantly in the second game against Tottenham and we should have gone through.

“It’s the way it goes – you have to take it and this year, we will be there again.

“It’s not about improving. At the end of the day, it’s just the way it goes.

“We’ve been out in the last four years I’ve been here and three times, it was almost a draw. Against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, it was just one own goal.

“The level is so high that the difference between the teams is so minimal.

“We will try and see what’s going to happen.”

Form

City head into the clash looking to respond, following Saturday’s Premier League disappointment at Norwich.

Prior to the 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road, Guardiola’s men had started the season brightly with four wins and a draw.

Shakhtar have registered a perfect start to their 2019/20 campaign with seven wins from seven, sitting top of the Ukrainian league table.

Last time out, the Miners edged a seven-goal thriller against Zorya.

Previous meetings

The two sides are facing each other for the third consecutive Champions League campaign.

Of the four group stage encounters, City have emerged victorious in three, including last season’s 3-0 and 6-0 triumphs.

Gabriel Jesus bagged a hat-trick in the last fixture at the Etihad Stadium, as the Premier League Champions broke our record for our biggest winning margin in the tournament - before smashing it again in the knock-out stages against Schalke.
