The 24-year-old has netted in her last three appearances for the Blues, earning her a first call-up to the England senior squad, and she scored a stunner on her senior debut in the Lionesses’ opening Euro 2017 qualifier yesterday.
In the absence of super striker Toni Duggan, Christiansen has stepped up with some crucial goals to keep City’s title hopes alive – and she asserts Nick Cushing’s side are ready to pounce should Chelsea slip-up.
Speaking after the 2-0 victory over Liverpool – the Blues’ game in hand – she told mcfc.co.uk: “The pressure’s on Chelsea now.
“The win against Liverpool was hugely important and has brought us two points behind Chelsea with just two games to go.
“We’ve done all we can in regards to using up our game in hand - the girls performed really well. We did exactly what we aimed to do at the start at the game.
“We moved the ball around really well, scored two goals and I’m delighted we’ve managed to maintain our form despite some bad injuries.
“The coach spoke to us about ‘the business end of the season’ and it’s important we get results. We did that again with a great team performance under our belts.
“Chelsea now have got to play Liverpool away and Sunderland - two huge games for them. Two wins would obviously see them win the league but we’re right behind them and desperate to get maximum points from our remaining games.
Who knows where we’ll be at the end of the season?
“Obviously, we’ve had a break from the league with the international games but now we’re ready to go again.”
Reflecting on her impressive goalscoring streak, Christiansen added: “It’s something I’ve been wanting to add to my game for the last season or so. I’m delighted to be in a place now where I’m scoring goals for the club.
“It’s something I’m looking to continue and seeing as Toni is unfortunately out with an injury, someone else has to chip in!
“Tash [Harding] did well to get her first City goal against Liverpool as well and we were just thrilled to get the three points.”
On the subject of her international call-up and memorable debut, Christiansen was of course, ecstatic.
She capped an impressive performance by scoring England’s fifth in the 8-0 win over Estonia, controlling well on the edge of the box before unleashing a half-volley into the bottom corner – a moment she’ll never forget.
She declared: “I’m honoured to have made my senior debut. It was a massively proud moment for me and my family. When I heard I’d been called up, I couldn’t stop smiling.
“I’m really happy Mark [Sampson] has recognised my form and I’m thankful to everyone at City for helping me improve my game and get me into a position where I’ve become available for selection.
“It was a great start to the European qualifying campaign for the Lionesses. I’m looking to build on it - hopefully, it will be my first call-up of many.”
City host Bristol Academy in their penultimate game of the season on Sunday 27 September (2pm). With a win, the Blues will go top of the table and they need your support behind them.
