Daphne Corboz spoke of her pride at the way City bounced back from last weekend's FA Cup semi-final defeat.

City responded to the setback with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Birmingham to lift themselves top of the Super League table, returning to winning ways at the earliest opportunity.

The playmaker broke the deadlock in Solihull, opening her account for the season in the process, and expressed her delight.

She reflected: “Most importantly, we wanted to get a win after the result last week. Maybe it wasn’t our best performance but we got the win.

“Our team has very good character. Obviously, it was a very disappointing result at Chelsea so coming here, the most important thing was to get the win regardless of the conditions and that’s what we were able to do.”

Corboz converted a rebound off the post to open the scoring, following an excellent team move which unlocked the hosts’ defence.

Ever modest, the American hailed the contribution of her teammates.

“It was really good build-up from the team,” she recalled. “Nikita [Parris] put a good finish and I was fortunate that when it hit off the post, I was there to finish it.

“That’s the style we want to play - it was a little difficult on that field but two goals we scored both came of two good build-ups so it shows our style really does work and we’re happy to get an end product.”

In the absence of Jennifer Beattie, Corboz has been employed in a more defensive role in recent weeks- one she admits was unfamiliar but necessary.

She stated: “At the time, the team needed me to play defensive midfield and I took it to learn everything I can from that position.

“Fortunately, we were winning games and I was able to contribute in that capacity.

“It’s important for me that the team keeps winning and I’m able to contribute but I’m happy to be back playing further forward!”

The Blues have little time to enjoy the victory, with another crucial game looming - a trip to Sunderland on Friday night.

The midfielder asserts the team are unfazed by the hectic schedule and relish every encounter - no matter how soon it arrives after the previous.

“This is an exciting week for us,” she added. “We want to be playing games. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum and keep it going.”
