Manchester City Women will be represented at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Swedish hotshot Kosovare Asllani will be competing in the women’s football event and has headed to her homeland in preparation before ‘the Blueyellow’ jet off to Brazil.

This will be the forward’s second appearance at the Games, after she participated in London 2012 along with her future teammates - Team GB’s Steph Houghton, Karen Bardsley and Jill Scott.

The timing of the tournament means ‘Kosse’ is unfortunately forced to miss domestic encounters. However, understandably, the chance for any professional athlete to compete at such a level is impossible to turn down, as she told ManCity.com.

“The Olympics is always something special,” she declared. “It’s something you remember for the rest of your life so when I found out I was selected, it was a good feeling.

“I’m having a couple of days off in Sweden before meeting with the national team. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

“It’s a great opportunity to play my second Olympics but at the same time, because the league in England doesn’t have a break like other countries, I have to miss a lot of games with City and that is disappointing.

“I hope the girls can continue the good form.”

Recalled to the national side earlier this year, the forward found the net in both of Sweden’s Euro 2017 qualifiers in June.

Employed in a wider position with City than she was used to, the 26-year-old asserted her game has improved and is looking to prove it.

She explained: “With the national team, I hadn’t been playing in midfield so in the last two games with them, I tried to make a big impact. I always try to do that and I felt I could from the midfield position.

“I have almost 90 caps for Sweden and I feel I have a routine and a different style of play than some other players. It’s all about how we want to play but I’m ready.

“I want to continue on the same track, continue to play well and hopefully, the results will come.”

When asked of Sweden’s chances of a medal in Rio, Asllani remained grounded.

We have a tough group with Brazil, South Africa and China,” she explained. “It’s certainly not easy.

“I think the most important thing is that we adjust quickly to the temperature because we will be playing most of our games in the middle of the day in a new time zone.

“It’s definitely going to be different weather to Manchester! I knew before I arrived there that it rains often - but I didn’t think it would be every day!

“Everything going to be very different than what we are used to so we’ll need to adjust as quickly as possible so when the games come, we can perform.

“I expect France, the USA and Germany to be competing for medals like always! I like how Australia play so I think they could be an outsider too.”

On this occasion, the Swede will not have the chance to play against her new clubmates, as Team GB have not entered - a fact that has disappointed many, including Kosse.

“It’s a shame Great Britain doesn’t have a team,” she stated. “Since England did so well in the World Cup, I think they deserved to play in the Olympics.

“I hope my teammates will be supporting Sweden!”

Good luck, Kosse!
