Nick Cushing hopes Saturday's thrashing of Aston Villa will kickstart Manchester City Women's season.

The Blues romped to an 8-0 triumph over the Super League 2 outfit to book a place in the Continental Tyres Cup quarter-finals.

The result provided a welcome return to winning ways, after two successive draws against Liverpool in the league which has seen the table toppers’ lead over second-placed Chelsea cut to two points.

Naturally, the incredible victory in Sutton Coldfield gladdened the boss - particularly, the manner of it.

He told ManCity.com: “Of course, we were delighted with the win but we were more pleased with the team performance - we’ve returned to the form we were showing at the start of the year.

“Technically and tactically, we were exceptional which is what we’ve lacked in the last two games.

“Against Liverpool. We didn’t play too well but we still created a lot - we just didn’t finish off our chances.

“To have put that right by scoring eight was really pleasing.”

It took just three minutes for the Blues to break the deadlock from the penalty spot - a fact Cushing admitted helped settled the nerves.

“When a team sits in and tries to hold you, when you score, it kills the gameplan,” he explained.

“It made the game a lot easier for us but we were fantastic and there were a lot of good individual performances.”

Recent weeks have also seen the return of key players from injury, as well as some influential performances from new faces.

Cushing reflected: “It was great to get Keira Walsh back on the pitch after a long lay-off. We knew she was ready. She’s a very good footballer and very intelligent.

“Tessel Middag had a good game - she’s made a good start to life at City - and Ella Toone played some minutes.

“I think the fans know I want to get young players in the team to develop them. She got on the ball and made a contribution.”

With a few weeks now until their next game, the boss admitted it is quite frustrating to have a break when the team are back on a roll - but asserts he will not allow it to hinder their progress.

“We’ve just had a break, played two games, and now we have another one but we’ll train hard and prepare the players so they’re ready for Notts County,” he stated.
