Manchester City Women continued to celebrate this season’s domestic success as they attended a civic reception with the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

In recognition of their double-winning campaign, Manchester City Council Leader, Sir Richard Leese and Lord Mayor, Councillor Carl Austin-Behan, invited Nick Cushing and his team to Manchester Town Hall for an afternoon of celebration.

Hosted by the Lord Mayor, the event on Monday 14 November was the perfect opportunity to reflect on what has been a fantastic 2016 for the Blues, before they set off for Denmark and their final game of the year against Brondby IF in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Manchester City Women’s Head of Football, Gavin Makel, believes this season’s success will extend far beyond the Academy Stadium and was proud to have the opportunity to share the accomplishment with council representatives, including Chief Executive, Sir Horward Bernstein. “It’s a privilege to be here to celebrate the fantastic season we’ve had,” he said.

“Winning the FA Women’s Super League for the first time was a tremendously proud moment for everyone connected with the Club and that’s down to the dedication and hard work of the players and staff.

“We have much to celebrate, but it’s not just success on the pitch. This year we’ve grown massively and with the introduction of our Regional Talent Club, we’ve now got girls aged 10 to 19 being a part of Manchester City and we hope they can follow in the footsteps of the players here today.”

City claimed their first FA Women’s Super League title in style, ending the season undefeated and conceding only four goals in the process.

For captain Steph Houghton, who’s been part of the incredible three year journey the Club has embarked on, it was pleasing to have her side’s achievements recognised.

Not only that, but the skipper also hopes this trophy-laden year can serve as inspiration to the next generation of female footballers.

“To be invited to celebrate at Manchester Town Hall tops off an amazing season and it’s a great honour,” she explained.

“For the city of Manchester I think it is really important that the success we’ve had this year is celebrated as much as we can. Hopefully it will inspire young girls in the region.”

Councillor Carl Austin-Behan, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, was delighted to meet the squad in order to thank them for the manner in which they’ve represented the city.

He added: “It’s an honour to have you here today and to say thank you on behalf of the council.

“Bringing home the two trophies is absolutely fantastic and the city is so proud of Manchester City Women.”
