Nick Cushing has explained that City’s 2-0 victory over Barcelona during pre-season has helped the squad prepare for Atletico Madrid.

The Blues meet Atletico on Thursday 13 September in the Uefa Women’s Champions League Round of 32, first leg, as they kick-off the 2018/19 European campaign.

Last season, Cushing’s side were narrowly defeated, for a second time, by eventual UWCL Champions, Lyon, in the semi-final of the competition.

But, as City embark on their new campaign with a host of new faces in the squad, Cushing believes his side have got what it takes.

“We know they’re a good team and top team,” Cushing said in his pre-match press conference.

“They’re the Spanish champions and I think that any team which wins a league is a good team and shows that they’re a strong team.

“We expect tough game and we know that they’re a team who plays similar football to us and wants to replicate the style that we play.

“We played Barcelona in pre-season and that was really good preparation for this game, but ultimately every game is different and this will be difficult.”

The City manager was brimming with confidence as he stated that he thinks his side can win any game they play.

“I think the way we play, the way we have played over past two seasons and through pre-season this year, I believe we can win any game and I believe that our style is suited to playing any team,” Nick added.

“We will prepare for the game like we normally do and know where we can be a threat to Madrid.

“We will give it everything we’ve got.

“The Champions League is where we want to be successful and the opportunity to get to next round, we’ve come to win for sure.”
